Backgammon Premieres on Television
Backgammon has taken a giant leap into mainstream culture this week as the World Series of Backgammon. The event is sponsored by
Party Gammon and will be premiered on European TV screens.
The series, which runs over an eight week period, premiered on Eurosport on Monday November 6th, and is the first time that competitive backgammon has been screened to a pan-European audience.
The series features match-play action from two tournaments taking place at the exclusive Palm Beach Casino in Cannes, where some of the world's best players take part in the Riviera Cup and the Nations' Cup. The Nations Cup features players in teams of two representing their countries in an international competition, with group stages and a knockout phase.
The Riviera Cup is an individual competition with a winning prize of €50,000, where players battle against the clock, being allowed only 20 min bank time and 9 seconds per move for 13 point matches in the 128 man tournament.
A
Party Gammon spokesperson commented that the series hopes to inspire something of a renaissance for the game of backgammon.
