Irish Open Winner
Poker champ gives away his winnings.
Irish Open winner Vincent Melinn puts 'bad beat' on opponent and antes up €18,000. When Vincent Melinn won the €1 million guaranteed Paddy Power Poker Irish Open 2006 he struck gold twice: once with his €350,000 first prize and again with a €250 each way bet on himself at 150-1 - netting a further €47,000 from Paddy Power.
Another player who struck gold as a result of Vincent's canny punt on himself was English pro Rumit Somaiya - in the latter stages of the tournament Vincent when into a crucial hand a huge underdog but hit a miracle straight on the river card to knock Rumit out.
Feeling very fortunate for himself and very sorry for his unlucky opponent he immediately offered Rumit a share of his bet in return for a little coaching for the rest of the tournament.
"I hit top pair on the flop with my King Queen but when Rumit turned over his pair of Aces I knew stood very little chance but a 10 on the river meant I hit a straight and Rumit was very unlucky. He has a lot more tournament experience than me so I asked if, in return for a share of my bet, he'd give me some advice on playing through the late stages of the tournament. Winning for me was definitely not about the money - I wanted the title and Rumit's advice helped see me through. I wrote him a cheque for €18,000 the day after the tournament ended."
Melinn, a 54 year old chartered accountant who usually plays online had only ever played one live tournament before, the World Series of Poker main event, and went out in the very first hand.

Hollywood Poker Charity Tournament

Poker player wins via Satellite
A Swedish sales manager paid $6 in a
bet365poker satellite and ended up winning $113,000 in the WTP.
Amateur poker player Jonas Norrman from Östersund in Sweden signed up for a $6 WTP satellite at bet365poker and ended up finishing fifth place in the main event, landing $113,000 in prize money. With a 1-year-old daughter and plans to build a new house for his family, there are plenty of things for Jonas to spend his winnings on.
"It feels amazing and I still can't believe that I have won all this money. I was very nervous during the tournament and could neither eat nor sleep during the week" said Jonas when we caught up with him.
He continued: "I had a great time playing poker in the
bet365poker qualifier for the WPT. I felt very confident when I played in the bet365 satellite and I started off playing tight and became more aggressive as the tournament progressed. It's also interesting that the strategy I used in the bet365 satellite worked well in the live tournament as well".
Such comments indicate that playing online poker is a great way to prepare and train for live tournaments. Jonas was introduced to poker only 3 years ago by his brother and now boasts 22 online tournament victories and a 5th place in the WPT. He does not yet have any plans to go professional but would consider a semi-pro poker career in the future. "It's important for me to have balance in life and I would miss working with co-workers and being with my family if I turned professional" he said.
Jonas is not a student of calculating odds in every hand but instead uses his instincts to evaluate every situation and change his strategy depending on who he meets and the stage of the tournament. "To play poker, you need to have a basic understanding of the odds but I do not calculate implied odds for every hand but instead use my instincts and choose to play the cards and my opponents rather then relying on statistics. The nature of the game changes in different stages of the tournament and just using statistics would mean only using one strategy" he told

With summer coming up and plans to build a new house for his family, the prize money of $113,000 is a welcome addition. "Even a week after the event I still can't believe that I won all this money but it feels amazing. I remember being very nervous during the tournament breaks but I was very calm and relaxed when I played poker. In the week after the WPT final, my phone has been ringing constantly and many of my friends are now asking for online poker advice" he said.
With Jonas Norrman's fantastic online and offline record, it's surely a matter of time before we see his name appear in WSOP, WPT and EPT tournaments again.

IPC in LV Coming to CBS
A new poker tournament launched at The Palms Casino on April 14, and after several days of intense play, crowned the first annual Intercontinental Poker champion. Though the game was standard No Limit Texas Hold'em, the format was a unique one in which 21 players, brought to the table by invitation only, represented different countries around the world and competed in a series of matches.
The inaugural Intercontinental Poker Championship attracted a number of top professional players who planned to defend the honor of their respective countries and declare that country the best in the poker world. Such players included Sammy Farha of Lebanon, Daniel Negreanu of Canada, Humberto Brenes of Costa Rica, and Johnny Chan of China.
The winner of the event, who is not to be announced until the television show airs, took home $500,000, a trophy, and the title of international champion.
The event was produced by HSOR, Inc., a major producer of television poker, and it will be broadcast on CBS Sports. The coverage will begin on Saturday, June 17 and run each consecutive Saturday for the following seven weeks. The eight shows are part of the "CBS Sports Spectacular" lineup of programming.

Why Uncle Sam Doesn't Want Americans to Play Cards Online?
The US Congress is attempting to pass a law to stop Americans from playing poker online. The reasons justifying this new law have varied. A non-profit poker organization known as "
The Poker Players Alliance" has recruited poker stars like Greg Raymer and Chris Ferguson to assist them in their opposition of this unjust and intrusive new law. A recent poll taken by the Wall Street Journal showed that 85% of Americans are against any legislation that would ban or inhibit their ability to play poker online.
What is the big difference between playing poker online and some other form of gambling such as your state lottery? To begin with, most would agree that poker is a game of skill and not luck, as is the lottery and most other casino related games. Also since online poker is a completely offshore business no tax revenues are generated compared to state lotteries which charge up to 38% on winnings.
So, how do Americans stop congress from passing this ridiculous law? Easy, as poker has quickly become one of the fastest growing leisure activities, the amount of people who now play poker online now constitutes a massive voting block. Should this anti-poker legislation pass they will simply not vote for one single member of Congress running for re-election that supported the anti-poker bill.
