Kenna James

Kenna James: Nice Guys Don't Always Finish Last (A Look at One of Today's Rising Superstars of Poker).

You might recognize Kenna James if you frequent the Los Angeles cardrooms. He plays often at Hollywood Park and the Bicycle Casino, just to name a few, as he lives in the L.A. metro area.

You might recognize Kenna James from his numerous television appearances on GSN's Poker Royale as a commentator, or the World Poker Tour final table of the Legends of Poker tournament where he played and won second place.

Kenna's outgoing personality can't be missed. He sang songs to the audience during the aforementioned Legends of Poker televised event. He sang and played the piano on the PartyPoker Million Cruise where he also won second place. And seeing his signature cowboy hat from across a crowded casino always lets people know that this player is in the house to play some serious poker, all joking aside...

Who'll Start the Bidding

On Thursday afternoon during the Party Poker Million V cruise, there was a Calcutta auction. This was a new experience for us. Even though it was initially confusing, the concept is really quite simple. In general, a Calcutta is an open auction held in conjunction with a contest with multiple entrants. Once the field has been reduced, it is a way for people to bet on who will win the event. Originating in Calcutta, India, and first recorded by the British, Calcutta auctions have become popular in backgammon, golf and basketball pools and can often be found around major poker tournaments.

In this instance, the field of the Party Poker Million Championship had been reduced to only 28 players from the original 523 entrants. A printed sheet of the remaining tournament players with their chip counts, listed from highest to lowest, was handed out to each prospective bidder. The list also told where the player lived and whether the player was an online qualifier or a direct cash buy-in. The bidding started with the lowest chip count players from the bottom of the list. Since nine of these players were very short-stacked, they were grouped into sets of three and auctioned in bulk.

Once all the bidding was completed, the funds were totaled. The person who bought the player that eventually won the tournament would receive 50% of the Calcutta pool at the end of the tournament, second would receive 30%, and third 20%. It was interesting that the players who had paid their own tournament entry fee tended to receive higher bids.

We bought an unknown, online qualifier from Midwest USA for $500. He had less than an average chip stack. It was fun meeting him and his family, and then rooting along with them. For a few hours, it looked like we were going to share in some winnings as he gained the chip lead. Unfortunately, however, he ran into some bad luck. He cashed, but we didn't.

When we asked him about his experience during the cruise and the Party Poker Million tournament, he said, "I had the time of my life. My wife and I run a family business and work six and seven days a week. This was the first opportunity we have had to get away in years. To top that, I promised my wife that if I cashed, we would use the money to go on another cruise to the Bahamas and buy her a diamond ring . . . something she has never had but certainly deserves. I cashed enough to make this happen"

His wife was simply glowing as he walked out of the tournament area. As they hugged, she told him how very proud she was of him. I doubt she could have been prouder if he had won the whole thing!

Poker North of the Border

Daniel Negreanu, Gavin Smith and Evelyn Ng were just the beginning of Canadian exports we are seeing in the poker industry. American Poker Player Magazine has kept a close eye on a unique poker marketer, International Poker Tours from Toronto, Canada.

While American Poker Player Magazine was in Niagara Falls at the Seneca Niagara Casino, APPM was fortunate to meet IPT's two operating forces, Rick Silver and Joel Sandler. They had just completed an International Poker Tours promotion during Seneca's World Poker Challenge - the USA vs. Canada Poker Challenge Series.

This event, which pitted North- and South-of-the-border players against each other, culminated in a main event with a $1,500 buy-in. More than 100 players entered for a prize pool of over $150K. Celebrities, such as Men the Master, Phil Lack, Linda Johnson, Tom McEvoy, Susie Isaacs, Jan Fisher, and Oklahoma Johnny participated in Seneca's World Poker Challenge.

In March, APPM again met up with International Poker Tours in the Bahamas at the Nassau Cable Beach Resorts & Crystal Palace Casino's first major tournament. IPT co-promoted the event, and winners of free poker nights and free Internet poker tournaments won seats to this event, complete with airfare, lodging and tournament entry. Of the 120 players entered, 15 players represented IPT.

During lunch at the resort, APPM witnessed one of the promotion winners come up to Sandler and exclaim, "Never in my wildest dreams, would I have ever expected to come to the Bahamas and play poker... for free! Thanks Joel for making a dream come true!"

International Poker Tours gives poker enthusiasts everywhere a chance to feel the rush of going all-in for fun at free poker night leagues. Focusing on its "real poker, real people, real fun" marketing campaign, IPT is more than just a poker league operator. Teaming up with local charities, bar and restaurant owners, live brick and mortar casinos, and Internet poker rooms, IPT offers its players a chance to win free seats and travel to poker tournaments across the U.S. and internationally.

Million V Cruise Seminar Tidbits

During the Party Poker Million V cruise, there were several types of free seminars given by various professionals - from digital camera and digital darkroom operations to working with different computer programs, and of course, two poker seminars. The first poker seminar focused on Hold'em and was presented by a collection of pros who shared multiple tidbits of valuable poker wisdom; the pros were Mark Gregorich, Gavin Smith, Barry Tannenbaum and Mark Tenner. The second poker seminar was on Omaha/8 with Mark Tenner. Mark's book, Winning Omaha/8 Poker, co-authored by Lou Krieger, is reviewed in the Bookshelf section of this issue.

Poker Seminar Highlights...

In an article several years ago, Linda Johnson gave an overview of a World Poker Players Conference where both Gregorich and Tenner spoke: "Mark Gregorich reminded me of Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind (but without the mental disorder.)" Linda went on to say that Tenner and Gregorich "were both awesome." Her statements are very relevant to this recent seminar.

During the cruise seminar, Gregorich stressed how so many players tend to overrate A-K:

"An A-K up against a 7-6 suited is not even a two-to-one favorite. In fact, since most people overplay A-K, and you can get away from the 7-6, you will probably lose more (not pots, but dollars) to the 7-6 than the 7-6 will lose to you. When holding an A-K and you have not improved by the river, if the other hand checks to you, don't try and bluff. Just go ahead and check... Don't bluff on the end with an Ace high.

"Have an idea what you want to accomplish with A-K. The most important strategy is to get heads-up. If you can see a flop heads-up, you may be a two-to-one favorite.

"You don't want to re-raise the tightest guy at the table when he raises. He probably has the better hand."

Barry Tannenbaum, a poker journalist and coach, left us with these jewels:

"“The GAP Theory - it takes a better hand to call a raise than to make a raise. Who wins the guy with the best hand or the best draw? Generally, the best draw. This is the only sport where the guy who finishes second loses a lot... except maybe boxing."

"Limit Hold'em is a game of small edges. In limit, you win an extra bet here and there, or save a bet here or there. In No-Limit, your objective is to get your chips into the pot with the best of it."

Among other insights, Gavin Smith, who has won a WPT event and numerous other tournaments, shared this:

"My style of play is unorthodox. I play a lot of pots. Tight play does not win tournaments. To win tournaments, you must play a lot of small pots, which will keep your opponents guessing. When I've got a lot of chips in the pot, I will have a big hand. If you want to be one of the ones not guessing, keep your opponents guessing."

"Hold'em is all about position. If you are last to act, you have the hammer. If I just call with a plethora of hands in the last-to-act position, then I can use a sneak attack."

Mark Tenner, poker author and co-owner of Card Player Cruises, commented:

"There are several top poker players who do what Gavin's talking about: Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey and Doyle Brunson."

"There are five actions at a poker table: check, bet, fold, call, raise. Four are good, and one is bad. Calling is bad. Take "call" out of your options, and you will become a better poker player. By removing the call, it will take you out of a defensive position. When you call, you are not making anyone guess."

Bluffing

Poker Strategy- Bluffing

The most common mistake new players to the world of Texas Hold'em Poker make is to bluff too much.

Maybe they are watching too many Hollywood movies but in the real world of poker and online poker in particular, the art of bluffing is just that, an art.

Far too often an inexperienced player will bluff time and again only to be called eventually and be busted out of a tournament.

You must pick your moment to bluff.

Bluffing at the start of a tournament is simply not worth it. The limits are minimal and the return is the same.

Later, when the blinds increase and stacks are growing you should Bluff a couple hands to keep people honest and get some chips for your blinds, Don't be greedy.

Sometimes when you try and steal the blinds you will get called with a big raise. Let it go.

If you haven't had a bet for a while, the table will presume you have got a hand when you do bet, so unless someone gets dealt a high pocket pair you have already taken the pot with no risk.

At some stage in the tournament you will likely have to make a decision on whether you are going to risk all your chips with nothing.

This is when you will know if you have the skills to be a successful bluffer when playing poker.

Pay attention to who is betting and how they are betting on the table. You may find an easy target that bluffs continually shoving all his chips in the middle.

Firstly, you have to set him up. Wait for the big blind to come around to you. Most players won't want to get involved with the aggressive player unless they have a hand so hopefully you can do some damage to him before someone else does.

You have been folding your cards, playing tight. The cowboy is on the small blind you are the big blind. Everyone folds, leaving just you and the cowboy. He raises the pot; you simply call. He shoves half his stack in the middle; you wait a moment, and then fold.

Now you have to show patience, for this to work. You can give him your next big blind too, after you have called his raise.

Third time lucky, now its time to get our money back and then some.

This time, again, call his raise. When he shoves half his stack in the middle you can go over the top immediately, as though you have been waiting for him to bet half his stack if not all of it, and shove all your chips in the middle.

At which point he will be thinking whooooooops I've been set up. You can have 23os it won't matter. Unless he hit a set or went in with AA KK or QQ this hand is yours.

Why does this Poker Strategy work?

The cowboy knows he has been stealing your blinds with his aggressive play. He knows you're sitting there waiting for a hand to bust him. Now he knows you have that hand.

BUT you have to be willing to lose your stack with nothing. Do you have the courage to bluff when playing poker?

Play poker against the pros

Play poker against the pro's - help house the homeless!

City West Hotel tournament offers amateur's opportunity to learn from world's best poker players; raise €1 million for Simon Dublin and snooker Ken Doherty, Jimmy White and Matthew Stevens.

Padraig Parkinson's charity poker tournament at City West Hotel, Dublin on 1 June 2006 sees a host of the game's biggest names give eager amateurs an opportunity to improve their game and sit at the tables with world's top poker professionals.

The event will be the first in a series of poker tournaments in Ireland aimed at raising €1 million for the homeless charity Simon Dublin involving stars from the worlds of entertainment, sport, business, politics and poker.

From 2pm on the day amateur players can get free lessons from some of the world's premier poker players such as Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliot, The Hendon Mob, Andy Black, Scott Gray, Donnacha O'Dea, John Duthie, Julian Gardiner, 'Mad' Marty Wilson, Ivan Donaghy and George McKeever.

They can also test their skills in the numerous $30 sit n'go tournaments running throughout the day with a chance to win entry into the main charity event later that evening.

A strong female contingent will also battle it out on the felt including Beverly Pace, former Irish Open Champion Jenny Hegarty, in-form Irish amateur Willow Connolly and journalist and broadcaster Shelly Rubenstein.

Registration for the main charity game begins at 4pm with the cards in the air at 8pm.

The entry fee is €300 (+€30 reg). €100 of the entry fee goes directly to Simon Dublin; the remaining €200 goes to make up the prize fund.

Tournament organiser Padraig Parkinson, himself one of the world's most respected players, said, 'Normally you might need thousands of euro to get anywhere near these guys on a poker table - here they'll give away some of their secrets and you could sit in the main event for as little as €30. This is the best value an aspiring player might ever get.'

Players can stay at the luxurious City West complex in West Dublin for €80 (single) or €110 (twin).

The event aims to break the European record for the number of poker players playing in a single tournament (currently 393).

Anyone wishing to donate to the event but unable to attend can contact Eamonn Connolly on 00353 (0)86 252 3720.

The charity tournament is the precursor to the Grand Final of the Irish Poker Tour sponsored by Boyle Sports which is generously supporting the event along with Paddy Power Poker and Victor Chandler which has offered a travel/accommodation/entry trip to Paris for the 2006 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Playing online poker

When you're playing online poker, you are probably in it to make a little profit and to have fun while you're doing it. If so, then here are three good tips to make your experience a little easier and hopefully more profitable.

1. Begin with a good attitude - don't play if you're not in the mood. This is a sure way to be a loser, but not only that, you'll get a bad taste for the game simply because you weren't ready to play.

2. Choose the game that you would like to play. Yes, this sounds simple enough, but too many players start games that they don't know how to play or they choose to play in games over their heads - too high of a limit, for example.

3. It's better to start off in smaller limit games than larger limits. It's better to get the feel of the game than to charge off into the unknown.

Make a cup of coffee before you start playing, take your time and enjoy!

Padraig Parkinson

Irish poker legend Padraig Parkinson is hoping to break the European record for the number of poker players playing in a single tournament (393) in Dublin on 1 June 2006.

He has organised some of the world's best poker players to come to Dublin to play in a tournament in support of homeless charity, Simon Dublin.

The event has already attracted some of the biggest names in the world of poker – Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliot, The Hendon Mob, Andy Black, Scott Gray, Donnacha O'Dea, Julian Gardiner, 'Mad' Marty Wilson and George McKeever as well as snooker legends Steve Davis and Jimmy White.

A host of other star names from the worlds of business, politics and sport in Ireland and the UK will be announced over the coming weeks.

The tournament takes place in City West Hotel, Dublin on Thursday 1 June 2006. The entry fee is 300 euro (+30 euro reg). 100 euro of the entry fee goes directly to Simon Dublin; the remaining 200 euro goes to make up the prize fund.

Padraig, who came 3rd in the World Series of Poker in 1999, said, "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for regular poker players to sit down with some of the greatest names ever to grace a card table, for a fraction of what it would usually cost."

"I have a lot more tricks up my sleeve including further sponsorship, big name figures from public life and professional poker lessons. This will be one of the one of the most unique tournaments in European poker history - so watch this space."

Paddy Power, Head of Communications for the bookmaker, said, "Any poker game involving Padraig Parkinson is sure to have the players rolling in the aisles with laughter. With all that craic, world class players and a good cause to boot we're thrilled to be supporting this event."

Entry into this event can be had for as little as $30 (+$3 reg) on Paddy Power Poker. Two special freezeout satellites will be run at 7pm on Thursday 18 and 25 May at 7pm with all the proceeds going towards tickets to the event and the registration fee going directly to Simon.

Hollywood Poker presents the Poker Classic, a tournament with an outstanding and unprecedented guaranteed prize pool of $5,000,000. The first place finisher will take at least $1,000,000 away from the final table!

Be a Part of Online Poker History!

This event is going to make poker history. It starts online on Saturday the 2nd of September and concludes with a live tournament offering the largest-ever guaranteed prize for such an event. Once there are 45 players remaining in the online tournament it will be put on hold and those players will be sent to the Casino de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain to conclude the tournament live on the weekend of September 30th. Players will continue with the same chip stacks they had when the online tournament paused.

Outstanding Added Tournament Value

The overlay for this event will be massive and unrivalled because travel and hotel expenses are not coming from the prize pool. For the entry fee of $5000+200 (or equivalent) the top 45 players will receive both their tournament buy-in AND a $5000 (approximate value) travel package containing airfare, luxury hotel and accommodation for the weekend in Spain!

Nobody Loses!

The best part is that all players qualifying for the live phase are guaranteed to be in the money, with all winnings being paid out to the players' online accounts.

Beat the $5000+200 Buy-in Through Satellite Qualifiers

Apart from the direct buy-in of $5000+200, players can qualify for entry through a number of scheduled tournaments and Sit & Go qualifiers (see below for qualifying structure).

*Please note that there is no direct buy-in to the live event. The only way for a player to participate in the live tournament is to be one of the top 45 players in the online final which players can only enter through direct buy-in of $5000+200 or through a Qualifier.
