Money Won at WSOP
The growth of the WSOP has been astounding. In 1972 Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston won the WSOP title and $80,000. The tournament only had eight participants! In 2000 there were 518 participants and Chris Ferguson become World Champion giving him $1,500,000 in prize money. In 2003 Chris Moneymakers (yes it is an appropriate name) paid just $39 to enter the championship via an online competition and won the whole tournament and $2,500,000! Talk about making a return on investment! Chris' win really sparked life into every single poker player around the world. In 2004 the number of participants had grown to 2,576 and the first prize was $5,000,000, which Greg Raymer won.
In 2005 5,618 participants battled for a piece of the massive $52,818,610 prize pool. The last man standing was Joseph Hachem and he won a cool $7,500,000. Steve Dannenmann came second and it was friend of Dannenman's who initially split the $10,000 entry fee with him each putting up half of the money. After Dannenman's second place they went to the cashier's at the Rio and split the money 50/50 ($4,250,000)!
Joseph Hachem's hand: 3-7 Steve Dannenmann's hand: A-3 The flop: 4-5-6 The turn: A (Hachem bet 2 million in chips. Dannenman raised to 5 million and Hachem re-raised all-in and Dannenmann called) The river:4 The result: Joe Hachem wins with a straight 3-4-5-6-7.
