Chris Ferguson

Chris Ferguson is one of the most significant poker professionals for the average online poker fanatic. He is the person who has proved that is possible to amass a large sum of money having started off zero, by playing in an online poker room. The challenge took place on Full Tilt Poker, where Chris started playing in freerolls, to put together a starting real-money bankroll. In a few months' time he reached the $10,000 threshold where the challenge was supposed to end. Due to the immense attention that his feat drew however, it was decided that he'd attempt to reach the $1 million mark.

Christopher Philip Ferguson graduated from UCLA with a degree in computer science. He was probably among the first poker players ever to take the game online: he played in play-money IRC-based games well before the modern GUI-endowed online poker clients ever appeared. His father is also a mathematician who teaches theoretical probability at UCLA. His mother has a doctor's degree in mathematics as well. With that kind of gene-pool it was indeed only a matter of time until Chris "Jesus" Ferguson would become a household name for poker-lovers world over.

Even though he had been playing the game since the age of 10, it wasn't until 1994 that he began to turn serious about a career in poker. He entered his first WSOP in 1995, and in 2000 he won the WSOP main event, beating T.J Cloutier to a $1.5 million prize. That same year he also won a $2,500 Stud event where he bagged another $151,000. Having started off on two WSOP bracelets, there was no time for stopping after that. Ferguson won a $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo event in 2003, and secured two more WSOP bracelets in 2003. (in an Omaha Hi-Lo and a ½ Limit Holdem – ½ Stud event).

His WSOP antics left him with plenty of time to make his presence felt in other poker events world-over too. He made a WPT final table and ended up with no less than 7 WPT money finishes.

In 2005, he proved why experts were right to consider him one of the best poker players in the world. In the National Heads-up Poker Championships he slashed his way through a field of 64 tough competitors to finish second only to Phil Hellmuth.

If you need solid proof that poker is indeed more of a game of skill than chance, Chris Ferguson is the guy to turn to. As of 2007, he's made more than $6 million on his skills alone, and if you're still having doubts about his capabilities or the fact that his skills are indeed to "blame" for his success, wait till he hits the $1 million mark in his Full Tilt Poker challenge.
